In addition, excessive alcohol consumption has been confirmed increase health problems in generally population .Moreover, alcohol drinking is easily lead to complications of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, there are poorly informed about the effecst of drinking behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between alcohol use and health service utilization in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data for this study came from the 2001 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)in Taiwan and 464 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. In addition,we also linked interview data with National Health Insurance (NHI)database and calculated propensity score to adjust for self-selection bias.Multiple regression and Poisson regression were used to adjustedfor other factors and analyze the association between alcohol use and outpatient, inpatient health utilization services. Compared with never drinker, alcohol use is non-singnificant in outpatient number(β=1.30;p value=0.65), outpatient cost(OR=1.00;p value=0.99),hospital number(β=-0.63; p value=0.13),hospital day(β=-25.29;p value=0.33) and inpatient cost(β=-279462; p value=0.37)of current model as well as previous model. The results were only significant in total medical cost of current model (OR=0.66;p value=0.04)as well as previous model(OR=0.53;p value=0.01). In conclusion, this study found non-significant associations between alcohol use and outpatient, inpatient health utilization services in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.  Weng-Foung Huang Yi-Wen Tsai 黃文鴻 蔡憶文 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 126 zh-TW
