Additionally the study captured and allowed the analysis of differences in participation as a relatable to the individuals’ demographic variables. The study’s methodology was participatory surveys, using a questionnaire model. Stratified proportional sampling was applied and the survey was conducted from December 28, 2012 to December 31, 2012, with a total of 470 effective samples being obtained. An effective recovery rate was 94%. The collected data had been processed for statistical analysis under the “SPSS” Statistics packaging software version 18.0 (Windows platform) and analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, LSD (least significant difference) test and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results are as follows: I. The recreational sport, which public junior high school students participated in the most frequently, was “Ball Games” and “Outdoor Activities”. The respondents highest rate of recreational sport participation was “2~3” times a week, which was commonly undertaken in sessions of “21~60” minutes. The respondents most usually took exercise in “school” and immediately “after school” time with “classmates or friends”. Only 23.2%, or less than one-fourth of the respondents took “exercise three or more times a week, each session being more than 30 minutes”, In other words, as related to the applicable standard of the Ministry of Education’s “exercise 333”. The respondents’ exercise ratio is not high and improvements need to be made. II. The principal motivations for the respondents to participate in recreational sports are in order of frequency listed as: • To improve my health • To better develop my physique • To assist in the maintenance of good posture • To help me relax • To improve my physical skill III. The principal constraints to the respondents participation in recreational sports are in order of frequency listed as: • There are other things more interesting than exercise, for example surfing the web • Miscellaneous activities, for example school work or additional classes • Unsuitable weather • Lack of a companion to do the recreational sport with • To not have the habit of regular exercise IV. In conclusion the study shows that as students become motivated, their susceptibility to perceived obstacles, dissuading them from participation in recreational sports, diminishes. The results of this study, suggested that public authorities, schools and teachers must actively engage in the planning of students’ recreational sports activities. Additionally the research indicated that schools should make available fully equipped gyms to foster with the intention to increase students’ recreational sports participation, which will as a corollary improve the nation's exercise habits in Miaoli County. .
