Besides the high value for it's feathers, ostrich skin is harvested and used for high-class merchandise. Also, Ostrich fat contains an unusually high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. At this time, we are trying to scale up the extraction of ostrich oil by using supercritical fluid carbon dioxide, modifying pressure and temperature conditions. Also, modifying the co-solvent improves its solubility. Eventually, the extracted oils can produce the desired nicotine emulsion through transdermal delivery. Results of extraction with supercritical fluid carbon dioxide. The extraction tank is 100 ml, as it is the biggest tank in our lab. We used two different co-solvents : ethanol “ 5 % and ethanol 10 % ” at two different reaction conditions : 60 ℃ at 300 bar and 75 ℃ at 300 bar. These resulted in the following lipid extraction rates : 60 ℃ , 300 bar and 75 ℃ , 300 bar “ 5 % ” produced rates of 25.63 ± 0.24 % and 25.21 ± 0.23 % ; 60 ℃, 300 bar and 75 ℃ , 300 bar “ 10 % ” produced rates of 27.6 ± 0.61 % and 28.08 ± 0.33 % .The extraction of ostrich lipids using supercritical fluid carbon dioxide “ 1.5 mL ” was formulated by combining sodium acrylates copolymer and paraffin oil with PPG-1 trideceth-6 “ 0.5 mL , ” Phosphate buffer saline “ 0.5 mL , ” and nicotine “ 0.3 mL ” . After which we prepared transdermal delivery experiments. The ostrich lipid emulsion-coated nicotine drug yielded a skin permeation coefficient of 0.239 ± 0.226 cm2 / hr .
