In the various types of recipe displays, there was no integrated solution that combined the kitchen setting by considering the behavior of users as well as the positions of information and controls in a single system for recipe instructing. This study investigated the correlation between the behavior of using recipes and the kitchen setting for recipe information displays, with a aim to identify the design factors about the future recipes. First, the author investigated many kinds of recipes and their advantages in the media contents, interviewed eleven users with habits in recipes, and observed five users’ behaviors in cooking. It was observed that users had to move the recipes while cooking and it’s difficult for them to understand the description of the recipes. Based on the above findings, the author designed an experiment that invited ten participants to complete the following tasks: (1) arrange the setting of kitchen equipment with the dual-touchscreen configuration; (2) select the types of recipe information and arrange their positions; (3) the simulation test of the interface. After analyzing the results, the best allocation was putting the screen for ingredient information display horizontally and above the cutting board, with these devices located in the middle of the sink and the stove. In addition, the screen for cooking process display was mounted on the wall behind the stove. With these basic setting, two versions of interfaces, i.e. flat control and vertical control, for controlling the video of recipe were constructed. These interfaces were tested to evaluate the performance, loading, and pleasure of interacting with the digital recipe. The study of experiments found that there was no significant difference in the two versions for user perceptions and task completion time. However, the vertical version yielded less number of errors while completing the tasks. In addition, the vertical version yielded less mental and physical loadings. Furthermore, more picture and less text is essential to facilitate the displays of recipe information. Quantitative contents are more important than qualitative contents for ingredient information displays. Brief text is required for each item of the movie clip menus for recipe instructions. Illustrations can increase the pleasure of cooking.
