It helps to narrow the differences for people with different abilities or different age group. There are many designs in our daily lives with unclear purposes or grey area that are affected by the designer’s viewpoint and the user’s perspective. There is room for improvement and revision before the products can be used in the most efficient way. This research concentrates on using hand tool - screwdriver as a product sample for study. By applying the theories and methods of universal design into the initial product design development phase, the hand tool design process is now a formulized process.However, most of the matured products have already factored in their own market considerations into the design and we can only help them identify the shortfalls in design accessibility. This research combines the designer’s viewpoint and scholar’s concepts of UD, and applies them to the hand tool – screwdriver. By using statistical study like factor analysis and program analysis, and picking and segregating the appropriate evaluation subjects to come up with a design guideline for designing screwdriver. The guideline converts Kansei engineering into a statistic number for analysis and inspects the correlation of independent variation factors.In regards to the entire evaluation of the entire hand tool, by changing all the appearance observations for several different screwdrivers into a statistic report and rearranging them according to their importance or rating ratio, we can come up with a new hand tool Universal Design evaluation scorecard.
