The culture events which naturally rely on the support of economics continue to decline. The impact of economic depression make people start to deal with the subject of philosophic thinking and social issue rather than a big budget production. From 20th century, the impact of national consciousness and Jazz music, Americans develop their music for a unique style. They start to explore their local music culture which is different from those of European traditional music style. George Gershwin who was born in the period combines modern jazz music and classical concert music. Also he leads this kind of pop music into concert hall. The only opera of George Gershwin and also the last piece of his is Porgy and Bess which is a model of blending classical and pop music. The dissertation study primary on "summertime" of
Porgy and Bess and divide into 6 parts: 1. Motivation and methodology of Research 2. American history，music background and a brief survey of George Gershwin 3. Exploring Gershwin’s music style and composition style 4. The background of Porgy and Bess 5. Analyzing, performance interpretation and comparing different version of "summertime: 6. Conclusion.
