Summary:碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 101 === The main research area in this thesis covers the four soprano arias from Georg Friedrich Händel’s significant oratorio, Messiah, including ”Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion”, ”How beautiful are the feet of them”, ”I know that my Redeemer liveth”, and ”If God be for us”. In addition, the author introduces the history of Baroque oratorio as well as the background and uniqueness of Messiah. This thesis consists of five chapters: I. the motivation and objective of this research, as well as the methodology and references used as the foundation for this thesis, II. the origin of oratorio, the reknown composers in Baroque era as well as their signature oratorios, III. Händel’s other oratorios, as well as the background and uniqueness of Messiah, IV. the discussion of the four arias in four segments, namely lyrics translation, musical structure, musical analysis, and performance practice, V. the conclusion of Handel’s compositional techniques in the four arias, and the singing skills to bring out the essence of the music.
