This is a case study of an Elementary School in New Taipei City, subjects in this research are current teachers who voluntarily participated in the investigation. After outlining the existing research, methodology of this research was set to conducting semi-structured interviews. This study aims to discover the occupation decisions of current hire and analyse the reasons behind their choices. In addition, this paper further confers schoolteachers’ attitudes towards their position selection and provides recommendations.
There are two key findings from this case study. Firstly, the rationale behind their position decisions can be defined in four categories.
1. For the aspect of personal factor, "children and their schooling stage" is the main consideration.
2. For the aspect of salaries and benefits, "special responsibility allowance and National Travel Card" and "tax related supporting policy and expand the gap of salary between subject teachers and other teachers" is the main consideration.
3. For the aspect of school organizational factors, "Principal leadership style" will affect teachers' willingness to work as an executive; while "differences in communication with parents" is the main consideration for working as homeroom teacher.
4. For the aspect of working pressure, "good relations with colleagues" is the main consideration.
Secondly, there is a discrepancy between how ‘position selection’ is perceived and how it is considered personally. Despite their general approval of ‘position selection’ as a way to advance professionally, evidence shows that negative sentiments were expressed toward it.
