| Summary: | 碩士 === 淡江大學 === 日本語文學系碩士班 === 101 === Newspaper article is as important as television news which is not only reporting recent events but also including reporters’ opinions. And it is also used by a lot of peoples as Japanese teaching materials. Therefore, to divide fact or opinion is the most important thing in reading of newspaper articles.
This study use newspaper article and focus on Japanese sentence-final expressions which is difficult to Chinese speakers, and try to find out the features of Japanese sentence-final expressions in standard of sentences. And the research materials are used 59 articles from “Yomiuri Shimbun” and “Asahi Shimbun” which is the top 1 and 2 newspapers in the world by circulation, according to “World Press Trends 2008” by World Association of Newspapers. First, find out the methods and features of sentence-final expressions in newspaper articles. In this study, modality exist in all sentences is proposed, so the symbol of modality is obvious or not would be the standard of organization. Second, examine fact or opinion through sentence-final expressions and the other part of the sentences from articles.
The result of this study shows the verb-sentence with unobvious symbol of modality are usually be used to represent fact, in the other hand, the adjective-sentence with unobvious symbol of modality, the noun-sentence with unobvious symbol of modality, and the sentence with obvious symbol of modality are usually be used to represent opinion. The frequency of use in sentences is very alike between “Yomiuri Shimbun” and “Asahi Shimbun”. In addition, between “fact-sentence”, the sentence that represent fact, and “opinion-sentence”, the sentence that represent opinion, there is a kind of sentence which is hard to divide fact or opinion and it could be called “vagueness-sentence” is found. Also, the frequency of three kinds of sentence is very alike between “Yomiuri Shimbun” and “Asahi Shimbun”. It can be concluded that Japanese publishers are normally using the same way to express fact and opinion in newspaper articles.
