The economic status measures of those who had widowed for more than 8 years, those widowed less than 8 years and those stayed married were compared. Methods:Data were from the national level secondary data. Widowhood information was derived from the 1996 wave and the 1999, 2003, and 2007 follow-up surveys. Economic measures were calculated from the 2007 follow-up survey. A total of 2559 participants were included and logistic regressions were conducted to examine whether the duration of widowhood was related to low-income status in 2007. Result :Results showed that, among the male elders, being widowed for more than 8 years were 4.46 times more likely to have a low-income status in 2007 and being widowed for less than 8 years were 2.17 times more likely to have a low-income status in 2007, when compared to those stay married. For female elders, being widowed for more than 8 years were 4.62 times more likely to have a low-income status in 2007 and being widowed for less than 8 years were 4.89 times more likely to have a low-income status in 2007, when compared to those stay married. More important, female elders who were born before 1931 were 2.81 times more likely to have a low-income status in 2007, when compared to female elders born after 1942. Conclusions :Widowhood has significant impacts on older Taiwanese’s economic security and female widowers are more vulnerable of falling into a low-income than their male counterpart.
