A total of 350 questionnaires were distributed with a 93% return rate (326 returned and effective questionnaires). A Motivation scale and Satisfaction scale was developed to measure the motivation and satisfaction level of the tourist towards whale watching activities. SPSS 12.0 for Windows was used for data processing and hypothesis testing, including descriptive statisticces, independent samples t-test, One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis. The results can be summarized into the following three points: · The majority of the participants are female, 55.5%. Age group of up to 20 years of age accounted the highest proportion of 19.9%. Most tourists have the education level of university or college, 42%. Tourists who are married accounted for 56.4%. Students accounted for the highest proportion of 25.5%. Household incoming between NT$40,000 and NT$60,000 accounted for the highest proportion of 26.7%. · Overall motivational ratings across different factors were generally greater than the median value of 4, with "Explore and experience" factor having highest rating, and "Learning and investigation" factor having lowest rating. · Overall satisfaction ratings across different factors were generally greater than the median value of 4, with the "Service quality" factor having highest rating and the “Experience” factor having lowest rating. In conclusion, tourists who have engaged in similar activities in Hualien have a greater likelihood to attend Whale-Watching activities again and with greater satisfaction, while the demographic background have little effect on the motivation and satisfaction levels of whale-watching tourists.
