Abstract
The study aims to realize the current conditions of teachers’ professional development and teaching effectiveness for junior high school physical education teachers in Tainan, to investigate the differences and correlations among different background variables on teachers’ professional development and teaching effectiveness, and to analyze how teachers’ professional development affect their teaching effectiveness. In conclusion, some specific suggestions are put forward according to the analysis results.
The study used a questionnaire survey method, and the main research tool was “The Questionnaire on Teachers’ Professional Development and Teaching Effectiveness for Junior High School Physical Education Teachers in Tainan.” The participants in this study were junior high school Physical Education teachers in Tainan. The total of 250 questionnaires was distributed, and 222 questionnaires were effective samples. The response rate was up to 88 percent. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
According to the analysis results, the main conclusions are as follows:
1.The teachers’ professional development for junior high physical education teachers in Tainan is above average; especially in “the spirit and attitude of devotion.”
2.The teaching effectiveness for junior high physical education teachers in Tainan is above average, especially in “teacher-student relationship.”
3.Male teachers’ performance in “the spirit and attitude of devotion” is much higher than female teachers’ performance.
4.Teachers with administrative duties show higher performance than instructor teachers in “the spirit and attitude of devotion.”
5.There are significant differences in “teaching strategy,” “teaching evaluation,” “class atmosphere,” and “teaching effectiveness” for teachers of different school sizes.
6.There are obvious positive correlations between teachers’ professional development and teaching effectiveness for junior high school Physical Education teachers in Tainan.
7.Among the dimensions of teachers’ professional development, “class management and counseling” toward effective teaching is the most predicable.
Finally, based on the research results, some specific suggestions are provided as references to educational administrations, school administrations, junior high school physical education teachers, and future research.
