Shooting the ball is the most basic basketball action, and the essence of the game. The aim of this study was to compare the learning and retention effects in sixth grade students' basketball shooting skill when applying the "Understanding Teaching" versus the "Traditional Teaching". This study recruited subjects from the sixth grade in Cheng-Kung Elementary School in New Taipei City. There were 30 boys and 30 girls. Each class was randomly designated as "Understanding Teaching Group" or "Traditional Teaching Group". The experiment duration was five weeks, with two sessions per week. The subjects learnt basketball shooting skills. Shooting skills were assessed prior to the experiment, immediately following the completion of the experiment, and two weeks after the completion of the experiment. An independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test were conducted for data analysis. The results are: (a) The "Understanding Teaching Group" showed a significant learning effect; (b) The "Traditional Teaching Group" showed a significant learning effect; (c) The "Understanding Teaching Group" showed a significant retention effect; (d) The "Traditional Teaching Group" showed a significant retention effect. These results imply that when teachers design a basketball shooting course for beginner students, teaching can be conducted mainly using the "Understanding Teaching", supplemented by the "Traditional Teaching". Adding interesting competitive or non-competitive games will likely produce significant learning and retention effects. This approach offers sufficient time to adapt to learning new skills in a step-wise or progressive way, while motivating them to learn basketball skills interestingly.
