A homosexual Christian needs to face the struggles of sexual orientation and dogma. Under this situation, they’ll struggle with self-identity. This study discusses the process of homosexual Christians’ self- identity that can realize their difficult position, and how to face the difficulties.
This study is based on qualitative research, and use in-depth interview on seven homosexual Christians who have self-identity difficulties of being a homosexuality and a Christian. The research shows that, among the seven interviewees, three interviewees have barely encountered the struggles from churches and dogmas. On the other hand, the other four interviewees have encountered struggles. And their difficulties are all from the church members objections. The study summed homosexual Christians up to two processes on self-identity. First: Discover → Suspect→ Explore→ Deny→ Identify. Second: Discover → Suspect→ Explore→ Identify. According to the difference between family backgrounds and Churches, there are different results on their self-identity. Although as a homosexual Christian is stressful either in homosexual groups or Churches, they still conform their belief and never give up.
Finally, researcher suggests that a homosexual Christian could make more friends, build their own supporting environment, and keep a positive attitude to approve themselves. Also, it is useful to have a sense of multiculturalism. On the other hand, the public should have a friendly attitude towards homosexual Christians, so that they can encounter fewer struggles when they find their own self-identity.
