While kibyōshi was only popular for a short period of time, its various contents, ideas, and unique comicalities deserve further research. The first major kibyōshi to be published was “Kinkin sensei eiga no yume” by Koikawa Harumachi in 1775. Therefore, this thesis is a study on Koikawa Harumachi’s literary works, including the other later writers who influenced by Harumachi. The research targets on inspecting the interaction of contents and ideas between a variety of literary works, which deal with “kantan no yume” (an ephemeral dream of prosperity), paradox, and current events respectively. Besides, characteristics and comicalities of these works are also discussed in order to make clear of the authors’ intention. According to the research, find out those authors’ intention simultaneously. As a result, it managed to achieve a revaluation of Harumachi as a kibyōshi writer, and a redefinition of the elements of comicality of kibyōshi as well as its transition from 1775 through 1781-1789, until its decline after 1794.
