Summary: | 碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 西班牙語文學系 === 101 === Nowadays the importance of language learning has been enormously increased. Having a good command of a second language is a must to link up with the world. Therefore, many colleges or universities have required their second language majors to pass a standardized second language proficiency test, which is a threshold of getting a diploma. Take Spanish as a second language for example. In 2009 the Department of Spanish in Providence University has raised the requirement for Spanish majors to pass level B1 of DELE or FLPT Spanish Test.
On the other hand, learners of Spanish are bewildered by the conjugation of verbs. If unable to clarify the use of verbs, learners cannot convey their meaning in speaking or writing and neither can they grasp the meaning in listening or reading. In order to raise the correct verb use rate of Spanish learners and therefore achieve reading comprehension, the study intends to verify the norms of verb use adhered to by Spanish native speakers through the frequency of verb use.
Based on the aforementioned motive, the present study aimed to exam verb use and the characteristics of topics in the text. With the instrument of Corpus Tool, we annotate and classify the data extracted from the Reading Comprehension Tests in level B1 of DELE. This paper analyzes the frequency of verb tenses as well as moods used in the text and investigates the relations between the frequency of verb use and the topics of texts.
The results indicated that first of all, the indicative mood is the most frequently-used type of verb mood. Then it comes with the subjunctive mood, and finally the imperative mood. Secondly, through the distribution of topics, mostly related to aspects of life, we are able to realize the versatility of reading texts. Not confined to Spain, furthermore, the topics are closely related to other Spanish-speaking countries. For example, foods, travel and culture in Latin America and so on are included. Thirdly, according to the analysis of results, the use of verbs varies with the topics of texts. Speaking of indicative mood, the present tense is the most commonly-used in topics with regard to life. Therefore, this thesis intends to suggest that Spanish learners should master the use of indicative mood and read a wide variety of topics in order to achieve the Spanish language proficiency of level B1 of DELE.
