Experimentally, the silica nanoparticles accumulate on the homogenously aligned side of the substrate by applying an external DC or low frequency AC voltage, creating agglomerates to stabilize the homeotropic orientated liquid crystals. Therefore, we can control the phase of the sample by modulating the magnitude and frequency of the voltage. The phase retardation range of the LC plate is ~2π.
