| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 應用外語系 === 101 === The boosting growth of foreign films nowadays leads to the importance of subtitling. A film is constructed with dialogues produced by characters with different personalities, personal relationships, social statuses, and gained knowledge. Based on analyzing the language use in discourses, characters’ traits and identities can be clearly reflected. However, no related study has been reported using discourse analysis to investigate language use in both source text and target text. The aim of this research is to explore how discourses represent the language use of characters and realize the goal of the story’s author. Moreover, the researcher intends to assess subtitle translation by looking into whether the language use in the source text is equivalently reproduced.
The thesis adopted qualitative approach for the two-stage exploration. First, the researcher analyzed the language use in the source text based on characters’ use of codes, speaking style, and tones. The second stage repeated the same procedure as the first one to analyze the language use in subtitle translations. Afterwards, the researcher assessed the degree of translation’s equivalence and appropriateness and also provided suggested translations. The result showed that mistranslation or over-translation makes the characters’ orientation and image disordered. To equivalently reproduce the effect of source text in the subtitle translation, translators have to rely on knowledge of language use in creating dialogues and pay attention to “what kind of person produces what utterance” and “with whom the person is having conversation”.
