Since the specimens under inspection are metal products with ring shape, this work focuses on how to deal with the images from shining metal surfaces with cutting texture. The experimental system includes a 500-megapixel camera, two lenses and three light sources to get acceptable images from different portions of the return tube connectors. In image processing, this work uses the techniques such as edge detecting, filtering, and thresholding to extract characteristics and the techniques like wavelet transforming and Fourier transforming to convert spatial domain images to frequency domain images. The proposed inspection method examines a part from four different views: large end, small end, inside surface and outside surface of the connector. The inspection performance has been improved primarily because of the modification of software. However, a new lenses has significant contribution on getting amplified images from the inside surface. All of the inspection functions have been integrated as a human-machine interface and the defects found can be displayed together with the original image of a connector.
