According to its historical background and geographical conditions, it passed through the following three stages of spatial transformation:sugar bu (廍), improved sugar bu, and modern sugar factory. Because of the establishment of the factory, along with raw material collecting regions and the railway transport system, the cross-regional network of production resources and space was formed. Japanese-style houses and Western-style houses, suitable for Taiwan’s climate, were built in the dormitory area, which gradually developed into a factory community and continued to be used after World War Two. Owing to the historical values, in 2009, the shrine relic of Yongkang’s Sankandian Sugar Factory was designated as a historic monument, and its dugouts were registered as historical architecture, becoming a statutory object of conservation, which made the area of Yongkang Sugar Factory a reserve, with the possibilities of revitalization. This study focuses on the sugar factory and the dormitory area of Sankandian Sugar Factory to explore the spatial formation and changes of Sankandian Sugar Factory in each stage and analyze its historical values. Through references, interviews, and field investigations, the buildings’ layout of Yongkang Sugar Factory is restored in this study, and based on the space layout of Yongkang Sugar Factory, this study interprets its spatial transformation. By the photos provided by the retired employees of Yongkang Sugar Factory, this study clearly represents the landscape of the Japanese architecture at that time. 碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 建築系 === 101 === Abstract
Located in Tainan, Taiwan, Sankandian Sugar Factory, which was renamed Yongkang Sugar Factory after World War Two, was founded in1902, the 35th year of Meiji, during the Japanese Colonial period.
