The essay analyzes the three pieces’ background, structure, performing techniques and the run qiang skill, attempting to know the way to use drama music material in the Zheng pieces and the transforming process from drama music vocal style to Zheng performing skill. The first piece is Liang-Huei Lu’s Zheng concerto “Melody of Huang-Mei-Xi,” which is commissioned by Chinese Music Department of National Taiwan University of Arts in 2010. This piece is based on Huang-Mei tone. Using the variety of Banshi in traditional drama music, it successfully integrates the musical elements of Huang-Mei-Xi into Zheng performance. The second one is also a Zheng concerto, named “Tunes of Henan Qu Ju,” recomposed by Guei-Fen Tsau in 1962. This composition uses five Henan Qu Ju Qu Pai as its material: ‘Man Jou’, ‘Man Duo’, ‘Yang Diau’, ‘Jian Jian Hua’, and ‘Lian Hua Luo.’ The concerto also mixes special preforming techniques of Henan Zheng school, which imitates the vocal music of Henan Qu Ju, presenting strong music style of the local drama . “Mi-Hu New Melody” is a Zheng and erhu duet, which is completed on the basis of Shanxi Mi-Hu tune. By using Shanxi drama music special scale, modes and Zheng skills, the duet expresses the lingering voice of Shanxi Mi-Hu tune. The finding of this essay is that the composers translate the material of drama music and merge the drama vocal style into Zheng music to complete these three distinctive Zheng compositions. The practice of transforming intonation to instrumentation makes better expressions of the instruments and offers new possibilities for Zheng performing.
