Phoenix is one of the essences of Chinese culture, which represents all the beauties of different birds. Phoenix as a motif developed from a totem to a auspicious bird, people vitalized the image into a special bird with spiritual content, which showed the vigorous and creative art works of Chu and Han civilization.
During the Chu and Han civilization, through the romantic character of Chu people, phoenix was developed as a significant ingenious and mysterious creature.The topic discussions of the thesis includes the lacquer wares, embroidery silk, carved bricks, eaves tiles, portrait prints and bronze mirrors of the Chu and Han civilization. The studies will be combined the traditional and contemporary concepts of designs to reveal the beauty of traditional Eastern decorative art, and the wisdom of the ancestor.
The purpose of this thesis is to study the aesthetic and cultural value of the phoenix. Through the understanding of myths, literature, idioms, and toponyms, we will be able to understand the meaning and origin of phoenix. Through the analyzing of the features, forms, structures and contemporary designs of phoenix as applications, we as designers will be able to fill with inspirations.
