The realism style was originated by Huang Quan, Huang Jucai, and Cui Bai. Their art works were used mainly for decorating only the corners of at imperial palaces in the early and muddle periods of North Song dynasty. Until the court of Emperor Huizong in late North Song, the flowers and birds paintings were no long the peripheral decorations at the court. They transformed into art works to relay cultural and literary connotations and metaphors. They even became instruments to promote cultural development policies. These art works effectively served the court of Huizong with fresh and elegant images. The “flowers and birds paintings” in court Huizong were not any more single-facet presentation, but possessed deeper and multilateral significance. As shown in the paintings of court painter Lee Zhong, the transitions of the art work style from North Song to South Song, continued the structural forms of court Huizong. Yet they were also stronger subjective intervention from individual “observations” of flowers and birds. This created much difference from the art works of North Song period in terms of the drawn lines and strokes depicting the birds in the paintings. The five flowers and birds painters mentioned above had close relations. They demonstrated through their art works that transitions from North Song Huayuan were a proper vehicle by using micro observations to witness the transformations of painting at Huayuan of North Song. Although the flowers and birds paintings of the five artists were discussed separately in this dissertation, their interactions were collated in the research study. Through chronological developments of these masterpieces, we detect their differences. What are the significances shown in the variations? These are the main points of this dissertation.
