Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 舞蹈學系 === 101 === This is a counseling case study analysis. The subject is a fifth-grader enrolled in a gifted dance education program offered by an elementary school located in New Taipei City. First, a case study approach was adopted to identify the social or emotional issues the subject had ever experienced in school and at home and her solutions to those problems. This was done by examining her cumulative folders and also through interviews and tests in order to understand the interactions between those issues and the two contexts. Then the author developed a 12-week counseling plan with eight themes tailored for her. Reflections were made right after each session in the hope of finding counseling strategies that worked best. The conclusions and suggestions are as follows. I. Conclusions 1.The atmosphere in a gifted dance education program is fairly competitive. The subject had good experiences and bad experiences and had even considered giving up but was able to brace up and carry on. 2.When encountering problems, the subject either tried to solve them by herself or sought help, which involved both positive and negative ways of problem-solving. 3.The author had designed individual counseling activities according to eight different themes, which included two meetings and fifteen interviews. Once a session was over, the author would immediately reflect upon her counseling and note down the subject’s attitude or behavior changes. The effective counseling strategies include: a.Be a good listener and an objective analyzer. Give more compliments than criticisms. b.Establish good teacher-student relationships. c.Give instant help. Deal with problems immediately. d.Do not give the subject tasks that are beyond her ability. Giving positive feedback is also an effective counseling strategy. 4.The one that benefit the most from this study is the author herself. The precious experience has well prepared her for future school counseling tasks. II. Suggestions 1.Elementary schools that provide gifted dance education program should give lectures on dance education related topics, and workshops on aesthetic growth, round table discussions for both parents and educators. 2.Schools should provide individualized education program to meet different learners’ needs. 3.Other than academic pressure, the students in gifted dance education program have to cope with pressure from dance training as well. Therefore, their teachers should take special care when designing lessons. And they should find opportunities to talk to the kids to find out what they are thinking and to give a helping hand when needed. 4.When facing challenges, children may become emotionally unstable. When this happens, parents should spend more time with them. Try to talk to them and be supportive. Always give encouragement and compliments. This may well be what enables the children to brave through difficulties and hardships. 5.The subject was advised to improve her interpersonal relationships by hanging out with different groups of classmates. She was also advised to be more empathic with her siblings. And if she really has a passion for dancing, she should show her determination and willingness to face the hardship of training. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.
