Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 兒童英語教育學系碩士班 === 101 === The purpose of this study was to understand the professional competence of New Taipei City elementary school English teachers, and to investigate the difference of the importance of each competence among them. This study first constructed a preliminary list of indicators through literature review, and then designed an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) questionnaire based on the list. Data were collected from 13 New Taipei City English workshop lecturers and 13 elementary English teachers, and analyzed by Expert Choice 2000 software. The findings of the study are as follows:
1. Classroom managemant was the most part in professional competence.
2. English teachers attached much importance to students, and least to parents.
3. Emotion and recreation management was most important part in professional development.
4. Lecturers worked together to improve teaching strategies; other teachers relied upon stunents’ evaluation.
5. Lecturers valued language acquisition theories; other teachers emphasized English language proficiency.
6. Lecturers adopted materials on student’s experience; other teachers gave weight to student’s interest.
7. Lecturers laid emphasis on studenst’s interpersonal relationship; other teachers placed importance on individual student’s performance.
The list of indicators in this study can be used by English teachers to evaluate their own professional competence and suggestions are made as references for elementary school English teachers, the educational authorities and further researches.
