Pre‐reading and beginning reading instruction should be designed to facilitate the acquisition of phonics and phonemic awareness. It is important to engage students in activities that direct their attention to the sounds in each word and letter sound relationship, to segment words, and to blend phonemes. In Taoyuan County, English teachers are certificated through eight channels. A survey investigation to understand that among these teachers who are certificated through different channels there is any difference with the concept of phonemic awareness and the application of the theory and strategy of phonemic awareness in teaching. The results of the survey show that those who passed the certificate from Ministry of Education in 1999 have the concept of the phonemic awareness more correct than the others, and that those who graduated from English related fields apply the theory and the strategy of phonemic awareness more often than the others. English teachers thought that students' strategies of learning English were not influenced by the frequency of teaching phonemic awareness in class. English teachers thought the students' English achievement was not improved by the frequency of teaching phonemic awareness in class.
