At that time, Taiwan was colonized by Japan, because of this special context, the book had a significant meaning for Taiwan folklore at that times. So those folktales in the book are important and valuable resources for study. For constructing the value and characteristics of those folktales, this study focused on exploring Li Hsien Chang’s compiled motive, analyzing and summarizing the themes of those folktales. Most themes of those folktales are "anti-power", "reflect local phenomena", and "convey moral values". According to these themes, folktales in The Collected Folk Literature of Taiwan reveal the spirit of independence of Taiwan culture and the consciousness of anti-colonialism. About the story characters, according to their characteristics, the main characters of those folktales are classified into four categories: "heroes”, " singular characters", "negative roles" and "funny characters". Thus we can construct the relation between the characters and the themes of those folktales. In order to explore the narrative art, we analyze the narrative techniques from three ways: "narrative point of view", "narrative timing" and "event selection" to canvass how the narrative art exhibit the story theme. Hope this thesis can support a better understanding of the folktales in The Collected Folk Literature of Taiwan, and be helpful to the study of folklore.
