In recent years, the newly-created stories and their forms of performance have shown more diversified look than before due to the change of social environment and political atmosphere as well as the influence from the modern theatre discpline. The stories based on recent history of Taiwan have gradually come to the stage. The author of The Seal of 1895, Chia-Wen Yao, wrote this book after he was put in jail for the Incident of Formosa. The Seal of 1895 tells a story based on the history of foundation of The Republic of Formosa in 1895 when Taiwan was converted into cession. Descriptions to the imaginary common people and their actions at that time push forward the story where the yellow tiger seal for the Republic of Formosa stands for the idea of democracy and the spirit of resistance which form up the oceanic personality of Taiwan, the island in the vast Pacific Ocean. The story is to reflect the past of Taiwan on its present. The Taiwanese Opera The Seal of 1895 exerts its recreational and artistic elements with beautiful traditional Taiwan ballads and amusing local slang’s. The affordable Taiwanese Opera tells the original story with vivid actions in a local dramatic way of entertainment. This essay is to analyze and conclude the images of the Republic of Formosa and the differences among the novel and the two versions of operas as a story of history, literature and drama by studying their plot structures, cultural symbols and characters. Adaptation from local literature to scripts and shows on the stage is a practical way to improve the literariness of refined modern Taiwanese Opera on the stage.
