Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 台灣文化研究所 === 101 === This study is aimed at depicting the loving stories of Ms Joyce McMillan, a woman from California, for future generations to memorize and praise her works and appreciate what she has done for this island. More importantly, this study would like to present her stories completely so that Taiwanese people can know what ‘love knows no boundaries’ truly means when they reflect on the history of Taiwan. Hopefully, people in Taiwan will pass the love of the Ma-Tsu of the US on to their descendants, making Taiwan a better place in the future. This study has the following focuses: I. Ms Joyce McMillan had resided in Taiwan on her own for 48 years. She went beyond boundaries, taking care of disabled children on the island in an unselfish manner. Though Ms McMillan was no missionary, her deeds embodied the ultimate kindness and generosity of Christianity. II. Ms McMillan came to Taiwan in 1959 due to the influence of Mr. Xie Wei and God. At that time, Taiwan was in short supply of human resources and money for dealing with humanitarian and charitable activities. In addition, Taiwan was still ruled by martial law. To improve medication in Taiwan and extend her services to more people, Ms Joyce McMillan established Da Ping Ding Church in Puli, where she worked as a dietitian in Puli Christian Hospital to take care of TB patients. In addition to teaching indigenous people English for free, she founded Erhlin Happy Christian Homes in Changhua to accommodate and care for Poliomyelitis patients. Afterwards, she established a center for assistive technology resources, integrating medication and education with humanitarian care, which set up a good model for social welfare institutions in Taiwan. III. This study analyzes the personality of Ms Joyce McMillan to discover how she encouraged the children with Poliomyelitis of Erhlin Happy Christian Homes to walk upright and proud and survive in this difficult world. Her character, expertise, knowledge, and motherly love thoroughly changed these children’s lives. Based on a review of the literature, this study conducts intensive interviews with children living in Erhlin Happy Christian Homes to comprehend their experiences and lives with Ms McMillan. This study concludes that Ms Joyce McMillan is closely related to the history of Taiwan in terms of society, culture, medication, education, humanity, religion, and Christianity.
