In order to comply with the regulatory requirements, the maritime industry is endeavoring to explore and research all the possible measures to improve the efficieny of diesel engine and intends not only to save the energy consumption but also to reduce the exhaust emission. In the electromagnetic spectrum, the invisible light which wave length range from 0.75 μm to 1000 μm, is usually known as far infrared. The far-infrared which wave length range from 3 μm to 14 μm, indispensable for the growth of organisms, is also called as the “Vital Rays” or “Light of life”. Through the review of research on the therapy of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), it shows that the far infrared function of rare-earth mineral composite materials could lead to the change of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) flame color, the improvement of consumption of Oxygen(O2), and the reduced emission of carbon monoxide(CO). The purpose of this report is to design and manufacture a device of far infrared therapy on the excitation of fuel oil by the composition of tourmaline. Through three kind of on-site experiment, including:the measurement and analysis of emission of diesel engine running at different working loads, the analysis of fuel oil samples by International Standard Laboratory, and the observation analysis of fuel oil particles by microscopy, the effects of far infrared therapy on the emission of diesel engine and quantitative analysis of the constituent concentration changes of the emission by scientific research could be achieved. According to the experimental results, far infrared therapy could change the physical and chemical properties of commercially available fuel oil “Premium Diesel” and significantly reduced the emissions pollutants, the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOX) about 18.1%, the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) about 25.7%, the concentration of hydrocarbons (HC) about 11.8% and the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) about 4.5%. Through the experimental results, the effects of changing physical and chemical properities on fuel oils including MDO, HFO-180 and HFO-380 had also been identified and confirmed the function of far infrared therapy on the reducion of emissions pollutants.
