However, if users arrive in an unfamiliar place, they might have another big problem with the directions to the nearest bus stop. In this thesis, a smart phone application on android system is designed and developed for users of the Taipei bus transportation system. The research focus is on the utilization of smart phone sensors, the data store, server-side support as well as the user interface to improve the usability and performance. This application offers functions for the user to locate and orient himself by using sensors on android smart phones and a location-based map service. After the user chooses his destination stop or bus route, this application will mark the nearest bus stop of the route and guide the user to it. A scale-dependent user-centered road map with filtered landmarks, range rings and compass bearing is provided to assist the user. The user can get detailed information such as the estimated bus arrival time at each stop along the route by clicking the nearest bus stop on the guiding map or right after he chooses the route. In this thesis, a smart phone application on android system is designed and developed for users of the Taipei bus transportation system.
