Soaked sand shale rock's peak and residual strength are studied based on triaxial shear tests. Test results show that soaked rock's peak and residual shear strength are less than that without soaking.
However, decreasing of shear strength is not always a function of soaking duration since water can not percolate homogeneously through whole rock profile if rock is unbroken.
On the contrary, decrease of shear strength continues as duration of soaking increases if rock is broken.
