Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 美術學系在職進修碩士班 === 101 === In the contemporary era, global market competition is changed because market information is easily accessible due to popularization by the internet. This has caused regions of capitalism to expand ignoring traditional market restrictions leading to a new form of global culture. This intense global capital market competition brings new economic advantages by enhancing cultural localization. After overcoming geographic distance and economic restrictions to individual regions in the global market, individual cultures gradually begin to stand out from within the global market.
This research and the creative works are based on the evaluation of the globalization of the west and east cultures between the later 18th century and early 19th century. According American scholar, Kenneth Pomeranz’s book “The Great Divergence”, the phenomena of the great divergence is the critical point when the east and west cultures begin to divide in their rates of globalization. The great divergence theory discusses how historic records show that the western cultural attitudes of the 18th century are still affecting changes in the middle class lifestyle as well as attitudes of consumerism in the present day. However, Taiwan’s current day consumers still have many attitudes and lifestyles that were developed by scholars from the Ming Dynasty of the late 18th century.
In this research I take a chronological look at the changes in current day western lifestyles, and analyze the global cultural movement beginning from the 18th century. I also look at how the global cultural movement influenced the ‘slow and confident new lifestyle’ movement and caused the contemporary design of cultural and material localizations. Real examples of light fixtures from the international exhibition Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2013, Milan, were used in an individual case study to help me investigate how globalization has influenced the use of materials in design and production.
Concepts based on deep universal eastern culture and characteristic local materials are integrated into the designs for the creative work portion of this research to create cultural localized products. These products are produced by using standard global manufacturing processes and easily work in today’s contemporary lifestyle creating a higher value. Modern technology and local characteristic Taiwanese materials are used to create these light fixtures within the slow and confident lifestyle movement. I used Ming Dynasty inscription as a model and classical Chinese verse as inspiration to create designs that would fit into a contemporary lifestyle.
The slow and confident new lifestyle movement is a kind of initiative karma, as far as within a limited time period we can approach daily life with a more leisurely attitude to bring more creativity to the future of this uncertain era. The slow paced lifestyle is a major social movement with the idea that awareness of professional and personal values influences how individuals reflect on self-esteem. By combining more positive and pleasant thinking and aesthetic inspiration to design creative daily life works we can present a slow and confident lifestyle.
