碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 101 === The purpose of this study aims to discuss the piano composition,“Gaspard de la nuit”, published by Ravel in 1909. In the 19th century, Opera had been prevailed in French music.” Symphonie Fantastique” of Hector Berlioz raised the popularity of instrumental music and became the beginning of program music. Afterwards, someone like Cesar Franck ,Vincent d’Indy, Charles Camille Saint-Saens, Gabriel Faure , Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Les Sux extended the wave of French music. Therefore, the tonal music faded away. Ravel is of French-Spanish ancestry who devoted to writing various and delicate music. This paper starts from literature review, in the purpose of understanding Ravel’s growing background of literature and arts. Next, analyzing“Gaspard de la nuit”according to these historical background and his creative techniques. Finally, summing up Ravel’s methods of compositions and piano techniques by analyzing structures of this composition and moreover, finding out linkage between literatures. “Gaspard de la nuit”combines all the elements of creation from the past to the present and applies classical Sonata form( Exposition, Development and Recapitulation) and ternary form. Besides, the work displays not only newfangled but classical style with characteristics of composing with mood in the 20th century. By reading my paper, I hope everyone could get more understandings of music style of Ravel and realize the meaning and value of “Gaspard de la Nuit” in the music history.
