Therefore in a lesson the piano teacher’s teaching and demonstration of beautiful piano playing, which might simply be a pleasant sounding melody for beginners, can be communicated efficiently. And then striving for appropriate timbre becomes the major focus which students will put the effort on during their home piano practice. The practical discussions of the teaching of piano timbre is based on the survey and understanding of the keyboard instruments used before piano, the development of piano’s construction and capacity, the change of western musical style in general, and the reflection of piano music style toward the improvement of the piano instrument specifically. This study points out three interrelated areas in the teaching of piano timbre to enhance this crucial aspect of piano pedagogy. These areas include the training of inner musical hearing, the refinement of the piano playing action including pedaling, and the understanding of the timbre influential factors of different music styles. For clear illustration and explanation of all related concepts and teaching suggestions, the music examples were taken from “The European Piano Method” by Fritz Emonts.
