Adopting the action research method, this study was to investigate the designing process and the results of a case method applied to character education at the 7th grade in a junior high. Thirty-one 7th grade students in the researcher’s school were selected to join this 8-week action research. With the core value of character, “empathy,” as the topic, case method was conducted in the character education class. The data was collected by teaching observation records, learning sheets, students’ practice records, students’ and parents’ feedbacks. The results of this research are as follows:
A. About character teaching design
a. the implications and the adjustments of a case method
applied in character education at the 7th grade
b. a practicable character teaching design includes
seven procedures.
B. About the achievements of character education
a. students’ achievement in the concepts of character
1. students can realize the meanings of empathy
2. students can realize the differences between empathy
and sympathy
3. students can realize how others practice empathy
b. students’ achievement in the actions of character
students can show their empathy to their family,
classmates, teachers and others
C. Teachers develop themselves through this action
research on character education.
At the end of the research, according to the conclusions, the researcher proposes some suggestions for the future study.
