Using the Great Masters Pictures as a basis to Teach Children Art
Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to understand how children express their drawings in two different ways. The traditional way: more controlled and the less controlled, freer way. Both styles are guided by the Masters’ pictures. Also, we compare how these two different ways affect the expressions of children’s pictures, and the courses of children’s drawings under two different ways of art teaching. The subjects of this study are 7 children from an artist’s studio by the researcher. The researcher collected a total of 204 pictures, from which 102 were copies of the Great Masters’ pictures and 102 were freestyle drawing pictures by the children. Quantitative related statistics tests as well as qualitative content analyses are employed for data analysis. The main findings are as follows:
1. There are obvious differences in the expressions of children’s pictures under the
two different art teaching styles. Children’s freestyle drawing pictures expressions significantly scored higher than the copied pictures of the Great Masters in the drawing content, colors and drawing ability.

children’s line using ability has scored significantly higher on the theme of Matisse than on Kandinsky. Also, the children’s line using ability has scored significantly higher on the theme of Van Gogh than on Kandinsky. In addition, the children’s color using ability has scored significantly higher on the theme of Kandinsky than on Matisse. And the children’s color using ability has scored significantly higher on the theme of Kandinsky than on Van Gogh. And the children’s drawing ability has scored significantly higher on the theme of Matisse than on Van Gogh. No significant differences are discovered in the expressions of children’s freestyle drawing pictures when guided by pictures of the three Great Masters.
3. Both art teaching styles each have their merits, children have their likes
and dislikes, but they all have a positive learning attitude and participate greatly. The different styles of art teaching guided by pictures of the Great Masters can help children to make progress in their drawing ability.
