Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of adapted physical education program on the social skills of elementary school students with intellectual disability. The multiple-probe across behavior design was utilized in this study. The subjects were two elementary school students with intellectual disability set in a self-contained class. The independent variable was the adapted physical education programs and the dependent variable was the performance of the social skills, included “encouraging partners”, “taking turns” and “cooperating”.
The periods of teaching experiment was 19 lessons and 25 minutes of instructional time and 15 minutes of observation time were included in each lesson. The data were collected from the subjects during baseline, intervention and maintenance. Visual analysis and C statistic were used to analyze the results. The major results were shown as follows:
1. The adapted physical education program could enhance the performance of “encouraging partners” in all subjects.
2. The adapted physical education program could enhance the performance of “taking turns” in all subjects.
3. The adapted physical education program could enhance the performance of “cooperating” in all subjects.
4. The parents and teachers of subjects also confirmed adapted physical education programs could enhance the performance of social skills.
According to the results and discussion of this study, some recommendations for the teaching and further studies were also made.
