The teacher, as the researcher of this study, designed and implemented three rounds of SSI-based learning activities in a different class with 32 and 30 students, and the students’ informal reasoning ability was highlighted as the important outcomes derived from the SSI-based learning activities. Various teaching strategies, including role-playing, voting, and online inquiry, were used in the SSI-instruction. Multiple data was collected in this study, including group discussions, tape-record interviews, questionnaires and learning sheets. The collected data was analyzed qualitatively and synthesized. Through the action research, the teacher’s pedagogical content knowledge progressed during the period of the SSI-based instruction. Based on the author’s reflection on the three-round action research, this study also provided suggestions for teachers interested in SSI-based instruction.
