In Taiwan, speech recognition test with Chinese material has been used widely. However, there are many individuals, especially elderly, whose first language is Taiwanese. Researchers have suggested that speech background may have impact on the result of speech audiometry. In 1994, Lin, Chang, and Shen developed a Taiwanese speech recognition test material for individuals whose first language is Taiwanese. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the correlation of speech recognition threshold and pure tone threshold for normal hearing subjects and sensorineural hearing impaired subjects. Thirty six subjects were participated in this study. These subjects were divided into three groups: normal hearing, mild hearing loss, and moderate to moderately- severe hearing loss. Pure tone thresholds and Taiwanese speech recognition thresholds were obtained from each of the subjects. Simple correlation analysis was used to assess the correlation of pure tone thresholds and Taiwanese speech recognition thresholds. It was found that Taiwanese speech recognition threshold exhibited high positive correlation with pure tone thresholds in hearing impaired subjects. The finding suggested that the material can be used to assess speech recognition threshold for sensorineural hearing impaired subjects whose first language is Taiwanese.
