The victims of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) may suffer from functional deprivation from morbidity impact. In Taiwan, just few studies can be used to illustrate the relationship between physical function level and the very survival trends among the peritoneal dialysis cases. The study, among the PD victims, aims to analyze the association between their physical functional status and their potential predictors. This study had adopted the cases of end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, based on the framework of the Taiwan Society of Nephrology HOPE software, from the PD unit of medical center in northern Taiwan via retrospectively nested case-cohort study design, and supplemented by the medical records with chart reviewing. Sample pick-up in the study had been defined as ascertained as ESRD for more than 3 months, consciousness well, age 20 and above, from Jan 1, 1996 till Mar 31, 2011. The recruited subjects be 820 totally, their physical functional status, measured by Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), with their survival trends had been analyzed by Cox proportional hazard model. As the entry of the study the average score of KPS was 83.6(±16.8), almost half of them(57.4%) belonged to ordinary functional level, moderate and mild deprived (disabled) subgroup were 19.9% & 18.4% respectively, and the severely deprived (disabled) rare (4.3%).Based on quartering approach, the higher score of KPS, their patient survival & technique survival will be better (p<0.001), multiple factors analyses, rather, age, education, occupation, serum albumin level, diabetes can help to interpret the variance up to 43.9% (R2), age be the strongest, followed by the occupation ( F=57.838,P<0.001) . Our study can provide nursing staff to realize, in addition to ESRD itself, the functional status and the prognostic approaches, so as to be the strong basis of further guidance and connection with following long-term care network .
Our study can provide nursing staff to realize, in addition to ESRD itself, the functional status and the prognostic approaches, so as to be the strong basis of further guidance and connection with following long-term care network .
