Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北護理健康大學 === 長期照護研究所 === 95 === Accidental falls are the most common cause of injury and this is particularly true for hip fractures among older members of the population. The use of hip protectors is an effective measure that prevents hip fractures among the elderly due to falls, but compliance is the key to this approach's success.
We conducted a quasi-experimental study at a dementia care facility. We used random sampling to select 59 residents with dement who still had the ability to walk. They were asked to wear hip protectors for 19 weeks, 24 hours a day. We analyzed the factors that influenced compliance using chi-square tests, t-tests and GEE methods.
The results shows The mean compliance was 48.9%. When the factors that influenced compliance were explored, we found significant differences among the subjects with different cognitive functioning. Subjects with a lower score for cognitive functioning showed greater compliance. This may be related to the fact that nursing staff spent more time taking care of these patients. We also conducted qualitative interviews with the caregivers at the facility in order to analyze their experience when helping subjects to wear hip protectors. It was found that a supportive attitude by the caregiver increased compliance among the residents.
The findings of this study suggest that enhancing the positive attitude of caregivers through education can be an effective way of increasing compliance with wearing the hip protectors among individuals with dementia in a care setting.
