This study was conducted in December, 2012 in three adult MICUs of a regional teaching hospital in the northern Taiwan. By use of focus group interviews to collect information through seventeen nurses' point of view, to understand the needs of the nursing staff of ICU care information systems. Interviews were recorded and converted to a transcribed interview data for content analysis. Results of the nurses' requirements for care information system are divided into four main themes: ICU care information system can present the complete process of care including nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, plan of care, nursing interventions and nursing evaluation, the critical physiological monitoring records system, statistics of various indicators of care quality; the system can help the related care activities, timely processing physician orders to improve patient safety, set meaningful warning alerts, and the charge capture system. Third, the system can enhance the effectiveness of health care communication, the interface requirements include unit and three shifts care routines, the summary of nursing care units, and the integrated information query for the diagnosis and treatment of the multidisciplinary team; and the fourth, the system can meet the demands of critical care environment to have diverse choices of hardware equipment, user-friendly software functions, a sound education for pre-and post on line use of the nursing information system . Therefore, in the development of ICU nursing information system should confirm the nursing workflow, conduct field observation of clinical work and the requirement interviews, use critical thinking for the care and the job reengineering to obtain standardized care and patient safety from nurses' perspective to build a nursing information system. An easy to use nursing information system can assist the nursing staff to handle patient problems immediately and control patient condition and apply health care management. Therefore, nurses can provide complete message exchange between the care team members to enhance patient safety, so care can be more efficient, and for the future reference about building critical care information set.
