Research on the collaboration of software project team calls the attentions from both the academics and practices. Major collaborative activities of software projects are carried out in distributed area in the same time. Therefore, implementations of project planning, communication, coordination, and integration by way of the supporting of information technologies become a major trend in software project development process. Based on the above discussion, this research aims to develop metrics based on social network theory to measure the activities of collaboration between software project team members. It can be applied into the analytical process of collaborative activities of software projects. Furthermore, this research also developed a web-based collaboration information system that provides four major functions such as message process, procedure process, collaborative process, and data process, etc. for software project team’s member to improve software project’s performance. An empirical study was conducted in the R&;D department of a large scale steel company in Taiwan. Findings of this research were described as follows: (1) organizing a software project team was the focus of collaborative activities during the assessment and planning stage, programming and testing was the focus of collaborative activities during the systems analysis and systems design, systems maintenance and management was the focus of collaborative activities during the systems implementation and formal operation stage; (2) communication was focused on activities such as organizing a software project team, testing, systems maintenance and management, cooperation was focused on activities such as organizing a software project team, programming, testing, systems maintenance and management, coordination was focused on activities such as organizing a software project team, programming, testing, system maintenance and management during software project development process; (3) hybrid project organization was the best organization structure for project team members’ communication, star project organization was the best organization structure for project team members’ cooperation, hybrid project organization was the best organization structure for project team members’ coordination on degree centrality, and tree project organization was the best organization structure for project team members’ cooperation on beteweeness centrality.
