V. thunbergii var. taiwaniana is rich in resveratrol derivatives, which exhibit and anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities. Air-dried roots of V. thunbergii var. taiwaniana were extracted with methanol. The MeOH extract was suspended in H2O, and then partitioned sequentially using EtOAc and n-BuOH. In preliminary anti-hypertensive assay, the methanolic extract of V. thunbergii var. taiwaniana was found to inhibit the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity, that led us to investigate the bioactive principles from this plant. The EtOAc layer was further purified by column chromatography, HPLC, and recrystallization to yield twelve compounds, including one triterpenoids: lupeol; two steroids: stigmasterol and β-sitosterone; one stilbene: resveratrol; and eight oligostilbenes: ampelopsin A, (+)-ε-viniferin, (+)-vitisin A, (-)-vitisin B, ampelopsin C, vitisinol B, vitisinol C and (+)-hopeaphenol. Alpinia galanga (Zingiberaceae) is a perennial, rhizomatous herb that has been used as a traditional folk medicine for the treatment of nervine disease and have been proved to exhibit carminative, stomachic, disinfectant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Air-dried rhizome of A. galanga was extracted with methanol. The MeOH extract was suspended in H2O, and then partitioned sequentially by EtOAc and n-BuOH. In preliminary cytotoxic assay, the methanol extract of A. galanga showed cytotoxic activity against the SK-Hep1 cell, that led us to investigate the bioactive principles from this plant. The EtOAc layer was further purified by column chromatography, HPLC, and recrystallization to yield twenty compounds, including two steroids and eighteen aromatics. Among those isolates, acetic acid (E)-4-(3-hydroxypropenyl)phenyl ester, 4-(3-ethoxy-propenyl)-phenol, (E)-acetoxycinnamaldehyde, and 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenyl acetate were isolated from natural sources for the fist time and two new compounds: (1'S)-1'-methoxychavicol acetate and (1'S)- 1'-hydroxychavicol -3-methoxyphenyl acetate .
