碩士 === 國立屏東教育大學 === 視覺藝術學系碩士班 === 101 === The subject of this research is the public ceramic relief mural art of Chu Pang-Hsiung, a ceramic artist from Taiwan. The research analyzes the background and concepts of his artworks, their forms and media and the various styles and periods of his artistic development, and discusses his contributions in art. The purpose of the research includes:
1. Exploring the background and formation of Chu’s public ceramic mural art.
2. Discovering the concepts behind Chu’s art and the media used.
3. Analyzing the various periods and styles of Chu’s art.
4. Discussing the achievement and contribution of Chu’s art.
The research uses interview, historical method and form-and-style research method to gain an objective and holistic insight of the artistic development and scope of Chu’s art.
Chu's artistic training and education is closely related to design. He has spent more than three decades studying graphic design, industrial design, landscape architecture, interior design and ceramic chemistry, enabling him to incorporate industrial, scientific and artistic elements in his art. He is also influenced by modern art trends and Japanese ceramic artists. With love and passion for the culture of Meinong, his hometown, he returned there to establish his Meinong Kiln, as a base for promoting ceramic art. His perseverance and insistence on innovation in his art gave birth to public ceramic relief mural art, a new genre on its own.
Every piece of his artwork carries educational and cultural implications. In creating an artwork, Chu always considers elements such as space and time and ensures that he has a sufficient understanding about local culture, environment and history of the place where the artwork will be placed, before integrating his own interpretation based on his experiences and artistic prowess. The concepts and creation process manifest his rich emotions and his professional design capabilities.
In the early stages of his ceramic art, he focused on creating art composed of modules—rectangular ceramic pieces that comes in multiple patterns and colors. The countless ways of arranging the modules create endless possibilities for his art, and the pieces are the best media for expressing his boundless ideas. Later, he blends in the element of sculpture and enters the relief period. In this period, the relief is the protagonist on stage, supported by the modules. The aesthetics of relief enhanced by colored patterns of modules made his artworks more pleasing for the eyes. In the latter period, his works are purely in the form of relief, showing his art in its full maturity. It dismisses the dazzling colors of glazing and returns to focus on the plasticity of soil, using techniques of sculpture to demonstrate the beauty of public ceramic relief mural art. In 2003, Chu received the “Best Ceramic Application Award” of Taiwan Good Crafts, an evaluation of crafts by the Council for Cultural Affairs and National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, as recognition for his artistic contribution.
The achievement of his public ceramic relief mural art deserves our recognition for (1) Chu being the pioneer in creating big scale, public ceramic relief mural art in Taiwan, (2) his idiosyncratic and outstanding artistic achievements, (3) education and promotion of culture through his works and (4) driving the ceramic art development in Meinong.
In creating every piece of his artwork, Chu is likened to an art engineer that combines art and technology, bold in breaking the conventions of traditional ceramic art expressions and materials commonly used for public art. His art fully integrates ceramic, landscape, architecture and environment, and offers a great contribution in the history of public art. At the same time, public art has become ubiquitous in Taiwan, and its cultural and social implications have assimilated into our daily lives. His endeavors and achievements in public ceramic relief mural art can serve as an inspiration for the younger generations.
