Counselors’ Countertransference Experiences and Coping with Old Clients: A single case study

碩士 === 國立屏東教育大學 === 教育心理與輔導學系碩士班 === 101 === This research purposed to explore how the countertransference experienced and copied by the counselor affects the results of counseling with the old client. The research text was collected from semi-structured individual interviews with one experienced counselor who was working with old clients. To present the findings and conclusions of in-depth interview, first a story of the participant was narrated, according to the period, about four topical subject; and further, to understanding the counselor who was working with old clients how to self- awareness and coping with the experience of countertransference. Second, the researcher directed to address the three research purposes: (a) the meaning and the reactions of the countertransference experience provoked by counseling the old client, (b) the interpretation of the countertransference experience provoked by counseling the old client, (c) the strategies to handle the countertransference felt by the counselor. Further analysis of the interviewed data unveiled the following results: (a) The interconnectedness of countertransference with many aspects, each of which is closely related to one another. (b) The significance of continuing self- awareness and supervision for coping countertransference. (c) The uniqueness of countertransference in the old client’s case. Based on the findings, this study shed some light on future research strands of countertransference and the professional counselors/psychologists with specific suggestions and recommendations.
