There were many fights between different ethnic groups in southern Taiwan. Liudui township militia often turned around the situation by rapid deployment of well-organized and high-morale forces. The Zhuangtou militia played the key role as it provided sufficient supply of combat power. The Right Heap Chuntan militia expanded gradually through fighting for land and water right. It finally became the biggest Zhuangtou in Minong area. Chuntan is chosen to be the field research topic of the study.
This study adopts interviewing, eliciting information and data by directly asking questions of a Chuntan senior citizen as well as other subjects in this area, as a main research method. The research centered on a Pingtung boxing master who was invited by the Liu family chief to teach villagers Hakka boxing from 1945 to 1950. Research subjects included some successful boxers, whose boxing lives were documented by interviewing, accompanied by other relevent reports. It documents Hakka militia training as to understand the villagers’ ways of living. This research also tried to explore the diverse roles that Hakka women played in boxing training as well as the influence they had in the field. This study, as a Hakka Zhuangtou documentary, shows several different aspects:
First, it shows the diverse aspects of the Liu family and their coutribution to the local community.
Second, this study documents the boxers’ stories and villagers’ ways of living, providing a reference for future research.
Third, the study analyzed the participation of Hakka women and their contribution to local community. It provides a different way of thinking, compared with mainstreamed male-dominated studies.
Fourth, the study depicts the diverse life styles and entertainment of Hakka boxers and thus changes the stereotype of traditional boxers.
Fifth, the study centers on social functionality, citing the survey data for the dialogue between boxers of three generations.
With the depletion of Hakka boxers, there is a race against time. The result of the study provides a new thinking and direction for future researchers.
