Recently, a tend of pro-ocean culture has pervaded in the academic circles of Taiwan, but it seemed that there was no enough integrated literature reviews to elaborate the oceanic culture in this island. Praise songs are categorized as a part of ballads of folk literature, structured of four seven-word sentences and composed randomly by anyone at the working circumstances or in the leisure time. Praise songs came along with the immigrants from Mainland China into Taiwan; people chanted their daily lives in these songs as the entertainment in early days. These songs spread in the early agriculture and fisheries society and faithfully expressed plebeians’ lives and culture. This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of interrelationships among praise songs in Penghu Islands and the oceanic culture. “Penghu Islands” is composed of 64 islands; therefore, these geographical features significantly influence praise songs spreading to Penghu Islands. Based on this factor, there are more texts concerning about marine lives in Penghu Islands compared with other regions. Thus, the author takes Penghu’s praise songs with oceanic images as source materials to generalize. Nowadays, praise songs in Penghu have already withdrawn from people’s daily lives. Local public sectors, educational organizations, civic groups and individuals are afraid of the disappearance of this precious civic culture; thus, they are zealous to preserve, promote and revive praise songs. During the rising trend of initiating oceanic culture in Taiwan, Penghu’s praise songs can fairly present the characteristic of the sea island and the maritime culture. Accordingly, this paper applies the phenomenon of “production, circulation, and reproduction” of B. Bernstein’s theory “re-contextualization” in analyzing the differences of the development of praise songs in Penghu and in other regions of Taiwan with various geographical features and how Penghu’s praise songs illustrate the oceanic culture. Key words: praise songs, maritime culture, maritime literature, folk literature. As the time went by, the fashion of Penghu’s praise songs has begun to decline. These songs are closely linked with oceanic themes when local sectors proceed to preserve and promote them. In this research, the author analyzes the social conditions of early local fishing villages presented by the Penghu’s praise songs significantly influenced by the oceanic geographical environment.
