This study aims to investigate the discourse and pragmatic functions of Mandarin Chinese preposition Yi in news texts. It also offers the pedagogical implications and suggestions.
In Mandarin Chinese, prepositions originally come from the grammaticalization of verbs in old Chinese and they have unique syntactic features. One is their syntactic position; they can only be put before some vocabulary. Mandarin Chinese prepositions are function words; they do not have many lexical meanings but have important grammatical functions. They can facilitate reading comprehension of news texts. However, for Chinese as Second/Foreign learners prepositions sometimes cause problems in reading Chinese news texts.
In order to find out the different usages about above-mentioned forms of Yi(以), the author collected 344 pieces of news articles from Chinatimes (中時新聞語料庫) as the corpora for this study. To be precise, there will have the common contrructions according to the statistics and the discussions between syntax, discourse pragmatic. This study indicates that Yi(以) as “na(拿), use(用)” and the form “yi…wei…(以…為…)” as “ba …zuowei…(把…作為) /renwei…shi…(認為…是…)” are most often used. Additionally, it is also found in the study Yi is most frequently used as conjunctions to express “purpose”.
This study hoped that through the analysis of the authentic data would provide a better understanding to promote the abilities of output for Chinese as Second/Foreign learners, and also hoped to benefit the teaching materials of Mandarin Chinese in the future.
